Afro-Latin America on STEAM offers a practical response to persistent inequality by proposing educational activism. With creative interventions, alongside research to measure impact, our objective is both social and scholarly. It is to build on good pedagogical practices in order to scale them into broad, democratic, programs throughout the region. The program builds on the approach to democratic pedagogy championed by Pre-Texts to stimulate access to traditional STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and math) that are typically beyond the reach of Afrodescendant students. It is based on the notions that art and literacy are necessary to studying science and technology and that local forms of knowledge, cooperation and creativity are assets, not obstacles, in the development of 21st century skills.
